The Laurel Center Wishes to Receive $700K Grant For New Building

WINCHESTER, VA- With its ongoing construction that is hard to miss in Downtown Winchester, Frederick County has allowed The Laurel Center to apply for a $700,000 grant, with hopes of boosting its progress towards the finish line.
"We applied last year and unfortunately, we didn't get it so this year, they gave us some really great feedback on how to make the grant successful so we really applied ourselves much more," says Cindy Marzullo, development coordinator of The Laurel Center.After much discussion, FrederickCounty decided this opportunity was beneficial for the new building.
"The outside of the building is just about complete. It's being broken up right now; we have the funds to pay for that part of the construction so if we are successful in getting the $700,000, then we'll be able to start working on the interior structure," adds Marzullo.While the current building is too small, Marzullo says the expansion will be more convenient.
Marzullo adds, "So when we're able to move into the new facility, we'll have eight bedrooms, we'll be able to shelter 24 people at a time, we'll have a nice, large community room and a much larger kitchen."She says if all goes well, it will be good news for its workers and clients.
"We have a shelter for women
who are escaping domestic violent situations and we have a program for
different prevention programs especially aimed at preventing sexual assault,
improving relationships for young people that do a lot of things in the
schools," adds Marzullo.
The grant request will be submitted by the end of this month and the chosen recipients will be announced in June. If the center is one of the chosen ones, they wish to have the new building completed by the end of this year.
