Free Services for County Residents at Homeless Resource Day

HAGERSTOWN, MD - "I'm getting a haircut. I needed a haircut, earlier today I got a photo ID. So it certainly makes it easier to get everything done," says Howard Hawkins of Hagerstown.

And that's what organizers were hoping for.

"The clients will be able to get services in one stop today during the day that might take them weeks," says David Engle, Dir. of Washington County Social Services.

"We're really trying to look out for the whole person today, the mental, spiritual, social- everything, there whole well being," says Jodie Ostoich Exe. Dir at Reach Cold Weather Shelter.

It was a community effort, free haircuts....health care services, and vendors sharing information about education and job opportunities.

Draped with Confidence, is one local group helping people take a step in the right direction.

"Business suits if they need them, shoes purses we've got some jewelry the goal is to send someone out feeling good about what they're wearing and helping them to be more successful," says Cynthia Perini of Draped with Confidence.

Organizers say with the high unemployment rate, and 10,000 Washington County families receiving food stamps, they wanted to make access to all the services as easy as possible. The Department of Social Services says the number of people receiving food stamps in the county is the highest they've ever been.

"I just feel fortunate I was able to get it, and it didn't cost me anything....that's a blessing," says Hawkins.

More than 30 agencies, practicing nurses and dentists came for this year's event.
