Snow Delivery Keeps Winterfest Alive

HANCOCK, MD- It was a day of fun in the snow for those who attended Winterfest.

Five truckloads of snow were donated to the Hancock Arts Council so the tradition could continue this year.

"Play in the snow, enjoy the time, bonfire and roasting stuff, it's just a fun opportunity," says Chris Reed of Clear Spring.

And that's what Winterfest is all about, the community gathering.

"Groups to come together cub scouts, girl scouts , church groups come together and work and create nice snow sculptures," says Sinclair Hamilton, Hancock's Arts Council Chair.

Those who attended the festival say the snow's been far and few this year, so they braved the chilly temperatures for a chance to learn how to build snow and ice sculptures.

"Well it didn't snow too much this year, so when we hear about the festival we always make sure to come up,says Carrie Hawbecker of Hagerstown.

"It's just amazing how ice can go from a cube, to a shape as a star, or snowflake or heart," says Reed.

Winterfest benefits the Hancock Arts Council, and money raised will help support other free events the council brings to the area.

"The arts are important. The arts are like the social glue of the community. They allow people to express themselves and an opportunity for them to come together," says Hamilton.
