NEW MARKET,VA - After 13 years of educating visitors about the Civil War, The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation has finally found a new home.
The foundation's mission is to protect, interpret, and promote the Civil War battlefield land in the eight county district.
"We moved here which was in 2007. Our staff, since then, has more than doubled we're simply out of room. We wanted to stay on a battlefield and interestingly, the whole town of New Market is classified as a battlefield," says Denman Zirkle, executive director of the foundation.
The new place will be at the intersection of Congress Street and Old Cross Road. Zirkle hopes the larger space will draw more crowds in.
"It will be used for food service facility which we want to use to have people drawn in to the center so they can hear the orientation, the story of the war, and also have a store there which we hope to use to make money with for the battlefield protection," adds Zirkle.
The foundation will be moving in at the end of February and a formal opening will be planned later throughout the year.
