Stomping Out Heart Disease To Raise Awareness

MARTINSBURG,WV- February is the month for the Heart Disease Awareness. Many women have been taking a stand against this number one killer.

They wore red heels, red dresses, red tops and a red heart to stomp out heart disease. The program, "Full Steam Ahead," held its first women's health event.

"There are other people out in this world who've been affected by heart disease and heart attacks and by working in this field, you learn a lot and see a lot," says Lakisha Taylor, an advocate taking the stand for her aunt who is in the hospital fighting a heart disease.

The event featured a fashion show, inspiring stories and vendors.

"It's taught me to love and support people. If they're telling you something about their heart or any type of health issues, it taught me to listen to those people," adds Taylor.

Martinsburg resident, Teresa Holmes-Lindsey, has been a motivational speaker for the program for several years and she had one message to women.

"They're their own unique individual and that they don't have to get stressed out or anxious because they're not as good as anyone else," says Holmes-Lindsey.

Lindsey-Holmes says she enjoys sharing information, raising one self-esteem at a time not only for women but for young ladies.

Each year, there are one in three deaths and approximately one woman is dying every minute from heart disease.
