CUMBERLAND, MD - As the city train traveled through town, so did truck loads of food.

It's called the Super Soup-er Bowl, and although it has nothing to do with a football championship, this benefit is winning the hearts of many at the Union Rescue Mission in Cumberland.

"We are so excited to help the mission. We've been gathering food donations. Mostly we are striving to get soup donations. Things for the rescue mission to make soup," says Donna Stivala, founder of the Super Soup-er Bowl benefit.

The Union Rescue Mission is the only homeless shelter in five counties; including Allegany and Garrett County.

The shelter will use the canned vegetables and dried beans to make a hot bowl of soup for many.

Stivala says this year City Hall, Walmart, eight schools and some 37 churches donated canned goods in record breaking numbers.

"Incredibly, five and a half tons of food got donated! Last year four tons got donated so it's a wonderful collaborative effort from our community. It's Cumberland's gift to the Union Rescue Mission," says Stivala.

In addition, the community sent enough money for the mission to purchase a new griddle and exhaust fan, something the mission has needed for some time.

A winning community helping others one soup bowl at a time.
