WASHINGTON, D.C. - One of Western Maryland's longest-serving congressmen is getting ready to say goodbye. 

Congressman Roscoe Bartlett has represented Maryland's 6th Congressional District for 20 years, but that run came to an end in November.

Bartlett, the second oldest member of Congress, says it's his constituents who have made his time in office worthwhile.

"We represented our people with honesty and integrity. I may have been the luckiest member of Congress because my district let me vote my conscience," Bartlett (R) said.

Bartlett believes some of his shining moments include getting funding for the military and promoting environmental issues.

"Senator Cardin came to one of our Go Green Conferences, and he said Roscoe was green before it was cool to be green, and that's true," Bartlett said. "I was building solar homes in the late 70s and early 80s."

Bartlett lost by double-digit margins to Democrat John Delaney after redistricting.

"I don't think redistricting ought to be done on a partisan basis," Bartlett said. "You're required to do it by the Constitution every 10 years after every census. I think it ought to be done by a non-partisan commission. I think you ought to strive to keep together as much as possible communities of interest."

Bartlett always carries his pocket constituent with him and says it's his go to with big decisions.

He looks forward to retirement but isn't ruling anything out.

"There's so many things I had to put on hold because of the demands of this job, so I'll be able to look at those things," Bartlett said. "I'm 86 years old. I came out of retirement, out of a five-year retirement to run for Congress. I've served now for 20 years. I'd be happy to continue the retirement. I have no idea what the future holds. I want to be responsible, so we'll see."

Bartlett says he's not bitter about redistricting and taking his final walk into the Capitol. He plans to more time with his family and on his farm.

Bartlett also worked as an inventor, engineer, farmer, and college professor. Bartlett has about 20 patents, including one for life-support gear for firefighters.

Delaney will be sworn in on January 3rd, 2013.
