HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Police Department responded to an armed robbery that happened around 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the CVS, located at 10 East Wilson Boulevard.
"Maybe somebody's desperate for the holidays. It's scary that even in small towns, there's bad people everywhere I guess, unfortunately," says Devin Poorman, Hagerstown resident.
Two suspects were arrested the same night, charged with armed robbery, assault, reckless endangerment and theft.
Daniel Knopp, of Hagerstown, pulled out a handgun while wearing a mask, and made off with cash from a store employee, when Patrick Weber, of Falling Waters, picked him up in a car nearby. Police found the gun and cash on the floor of the car soon after.
Just last August, this CVS was robbed for narcotics, but now, exactly three weeks after one another, two armed robberies have left here with an undisclosed amount of cash. Many ask is this becoming a trend, or are these crimes random?
Hagerstown Police say it could be the time of year, but usually it's that more people notice these crimes around the holidays.
"I don't think you can call it a trend, it may not be random. The suspect that was arrested in last night's robbery said he got the idea from reading about, or hearing about, the previous robbery. I don't think two makes a trend," says Lt. Tom Langston, with the Hagerstown Police Department.
The store is somewhat tucked away, but near busy traffic.
"I'm a local person, I was born and raised in the area, and this isn't some place I would ever consider to be a problem area. I have small kids, I wouldn't think twice about going in and out some place, especially in the middle of the day like that," says Poorman.
Police say a crime prevention specialist will be working with CVS to help prevent this from happening again.
