A Surprise Performance for Shoppers

FREDERICK, MD - Just when the holiday hustle and bustle started to pick up, a group of local students surprised shoppers, stopping them in their tracks.
"No one really just expects people to just start playing music, especially in a mall," says Eric Yang, the Concert Master and violinist with the Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra (FRYO).
The Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra quickly set-up their instruments in the Francis Scott Key Mall using the element of surprise to master what they call a "flash mob" performance.
"It's definitely a cool way to express our love for music. Normally we just all gather around in white and black, and we wear ties and we just play, but now we're in public and we can actually see the people who we're playing with and we can connect with them more," says Yang.
"It was fun, it was interesting. It was our first time doing it," says Collin David, a cellist with FRYO.
The Orchestra put this show on with just one rehearsal.
"But it was very good for one rehearsal," adds David.
"It just brings people to the arts, you don't necessarily have to go to a concert hall, you can go into the mall and get as many people. Based on today's performance, you see all these people just totally into it and excited, and it gives the kids another performance venue," says Stephen Czarkowski, the Artist Director with FRYO.
Czarkowski says they want to play their music for all people.
"I believe, especially with orchestras, we have to give something back to the community. We don't just serve playing music in a concert hall, we need to give back to the community, we need to give back to the people, and it's food for the soul, that's what I say," says Czarkowski.
So when can you see this talented group next?
WHAG ask if there are any upcoming flash mob performances:
"I don't think that I can tell you that, because that's definitely on the down-low," says Yang.

You'll just have to wait and see.
