BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV - Environmental groups say fish and wildlife have already been adversely impacted by a fuel spill in Berkeley Springs Monday night.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Department says a tanker truck crew was filling the tanks at a Sheetz Convenience Store when at least 350 gallons spilled into Warm Springs Run.

It happened shortly after 10 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Route 9 and 522. The Berkeley Springs and Great Cacapon volunteer fire departments responded to the scene, as did Hancock, Md., volunteer firefighters and a Washington County, Md., hazmat team.

Morgan County Fire and Rescue says crews cleared out around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning.

A Sheetz spokesperson says their environmental team is on the scene trying to determine the extent of the spill. Sheetz says they will continue to work on the cleanup and make sure contaminated is abated.

Officials with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection were on the scene monitoring the damage, however declined an on camera interview but are at the location of the spill and evaluating the situation.

No word yet as to whether any of the fuel has reached the Potomac River.
