FREDERICK COUNTY, MD - The community, elected officials, members from local police departments, and the Frederick County Sheriff's Office all joined F.R.I.E.N.D.S of Frederick at MDL Holiday Cinemas for World Down Syndrome Awareness Day.

Films were shown to educate the public and raise awareness for people with Down Syndrome.

An extra touchy subject for the area, ever since a man with Down syndrome died after he was arrested by three off-duty Frederick County Sheriff's Deputies.

"It was a very unfortunate tragic event, as parents it impacted all of us, and we need to be champions of change," says Katie Routzahn, the event organizer.

26-year-old Ethan Saylor was arrested at the Regal Cinemas in Frederick back in January. Deputies say he refused to leave the theater and was acting hostile. Frederick County's Sheriff Chuck Jenkins says he'll take what he learns from the event back to his Office.

"How to interact with people with Down syndrome, and I'm going to take that back to the agency and you know do what can we do to improve law enforcement, how to interact with families like it," says Sheriff Chuck Jenkins, of the Frederick county Sheriff's Office.

The investigation is being reviewed by the State's Attorney's Office.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S of Frederick describes the man as an absolute blast, and says his memory lives on.

"We'll remember him and as a group we'll do whatever we can, we're already talking about creating a scholarship in his name," says Denny Weikert, the F.R.I.E.N.D.S of Frederick President.

The investigation is on going and Sheriff Jenkins says he expects the case to go to a grand jury.
