Chambersburg School Board Votes Against Gay-Straight Alliance

CHAMBERSBURG, PA - Students wanted to start an official Gay Straight Alliance club at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, but the school board voted against it.

The unofficial club now meets after school each week.

One of the group's advisors says its goal is to support students who may face bullying.

"They really want to focus on bullying and bring more awareness about some of the issues that they deal with on a daily basis," says teacher Susan Shuff, co-advisor of the group.

Students hoped to make it an official club, one that could fundraise, participate in school events and in the morning announcements.

But on Wednesday night, the school board voted 5 to 4 against allowing it in the school as a club.

Joan Smith, who voted in favor of the club, says it started in reaction to bullying and it's not the school board's place to prevent it.

"If it's going to give them extra support with this club then I'm for that," she says. "Because I believe that those kids need to have a safe haven, to have somebody to talk to about their issues, and if this is whats it's going to take, so be it."

Smith says personal opinions led some school board members to vote against it.

"If you have personal issues, you have to put those aside just think of the big picture of what is going on here," she says.

The GSA says its goals are to create safe environments in schools, by educating about homophobia and fighting harassment and violence.

"We're still hopeful that it can become official," says Shuff.

The vote may directly violate the federal Equal Access Act. The act says if one group is allowed to meet at school, other groups must have equal access. The school district may face a lawsuit in response to the school board's vote.

In response to Tucker L., the article states that its goal is to support students who may face bullying [due to being LGBT] but it's mission is to provide a safe haven for LGBT students to share their experiences with fellow LGBT students, and to foster positive relations between LGBT students and students who are not LGBT. Homophobia which is often exemplified through bullying is one of the issues and focus of the group but not the only one. Bottom line is, if we fought for the right for one segment of the student population to be represented via a club in order for them to have a safe haven and to share their experiences such as Christians, Humanitarians, Honor Students, Athletes, and etc then we need to provide that same right to all segments of the student population irregardless of one's personal beliefs which by the way is the law.

I agree, they should not face a lawsuit if they have a differing opinion ; it's also persecution. The club could also be Satan's ploy ( unbeknownst to them) to get people to accept homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle. Jesus loved the sinner, but not the sin. Jesus hates sin because it hurts people. When will they ever learn that if they encourage this sin, they are hurting people spiritually, physically and probably emotionally? I feel sorry for homosexuals that no one tells them the truth, or lead them to ministries that could help them, like Exodus International etc. Yes, people should treat homosexuals nice, but they shouldn't hurt them by compromising and telling them that this lifestyle won't hurt them, because it will.

The reason stated to for wanting to start the alliance is to protect the homosexual kids from being bullied. If the school is doing its job properly, the club is not needed. The school should be protecting all kids from bullying. What about all the %u201Csmart kids%u201D or %u201Clittle kids%u201D are they going to be unprotected if they don%u2019t get a club? One of the ladies interviewed who was in favor of the club because of bullying was herself bullying those who opposed to the club. She told those opposed to the club to put their opinions aside and just let them form the club or they would face a lawsuit. Sounds like bullying to me. Is she the only one entitled to an opinion? I say let all parties involved express their opinions and discuss them reasonably, not emotionally.
