WHAG- Argo receiving the award for Best Picture at the Oscars Sunday night was what many local movie fans hoped for.

On Monday, residents gleamed with pride for the hero in the movie, Tony Mendez, a Washington County Resident.

Ben Affleck stars as Mendez in the movie as a CIA agent. People in the community are proud for the Oscar award-winning picture being based on a local resident.

The movie is based on Mendez's events during the Iran hostage crisis when he helped six Americans hiding in Tehran escape.

"I'm very excited about Hollywood acknowledging a hero and the sacrificing he has done," says Pat Dattilio, a Washington County resident. "He has been a great asset to this community."

Argo also won an Oscar for Best Film Editing, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
