What is Presidents' Day Really Celebrating?

HAGERSTOWN, MD - You hear it on the radio: "It's the Presidents' Day event at your local Ford dealer!"

To many, Presidents' Day evolved from birthday celebrations to a four-wheel sale event.

"This young man is going to make me a tremendous deal because it's Presidents' Day," says Daniel Hammon, a car shopper.

Dealerships say Presidents' Day is the kick-off to the car sales' season that runs through the end of March.

"It's gotten away from it as far as it used to be about the presidents, but now it's a way for the dealers to advertise and market their vehicles," says Ashley Lowman, internet sales manager with Hamilton Nissan in Hagerstown.

Hamilton Nissan in Hagerstown says between all of the rebates and sales, this is when they sell the most cars.

"We're doing some pretty crazy things with pricing this month, as far as further negotiating, pushing out the inventory," says Ashley.

The way we celebrate Presidents' Day has changed quite a bit over the years, but do you remember why it became a holiday?

"Abraham Lincoln's birthday was the twelfth of February and we used to celebrate that. Then Washington's birthday was the twenty-second of February, and we celebrated that. Then they combined them so neither one of them can celebrate on their birthday," laughs Reda Hammon, a car shopper.

Though times have changed, some say the holiday is still a reminder of liberties.

"I can come and shop for a car today if I want to, nobody tells me that I can't. I have the freedoms, all of the freedoms that we're eligible and entitled to being Americans," says Daniel.

So whether it's a long weekend or lesson in history, Happy Presidents' Day.
