Captain Mark Holtzman will take his Oath of Office during the Mayor and Council meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 22.
"I am very pleased with the unanimous decision of the City Council to appoint Mark Holtzman as our new Police Chief. We believe he has the integrity, education and experience to lead the department," says Mayor Dave Gysberts.
Captain Holtzman served with the Hagerstown Police Department throughout the last 23 years. He was hired through the Police Cadet program in July of 1989 and served in various operations of the Uniformed Patrol Bureau divisions.
He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1988 and worked with the Narcotics Task Force, including an assignment as director. Holtzman earned a promotion to Lieutenant in 2007 and later moved to oversee all Patrol and Investigations personnel upon his promotion to Operations Captain in 2009.
Captain Holtzman has been serving as the Acting Chief since September 6, 2012.
"We are fortunate to have someone of Mark's experience and ability to serve in this position, and I believe he will continue to build on HPD's performance and reputation as a very effective and professional department," says Bruce Zimmerman, City Administrator.
