The West Virginia Board of Education appointed Dr. James Phares as the 28th state superintendent of schools for the time being.
Phares is the former superintendent of Randolph County Schools and has been working in education for 40 years.
He will be replacing Dr. Jorea Marple who was fired last month.
Officials say they will still be conducting a nationwide search for a long term candidate as Phares does not have the state requirements to qualify for the position.
Phares begins his new role on January 2, 2013.
