Downtown Hagerstown Decks the Halls

HAGERSTOWN, MD - Store windows in Hagerstown that were once sitting dark are now lit up with holiday cheer.

"Instead of having something that's black and dark, now it has lights in it, brightness, it has character in it," says Paul Deputy, co-owner of the Gourmet Goat and member of the Downtown Alliance. "And now people are realizing you know what, maybe I can actually put something into that storefront."

It's part of the Downtown Alliance's deck the halls contest, to help make downtown merry and bright.

Not only are businesses competing for the best decorated window, non-profits are also going for the cash prize. Including the Humane Society, which went for a canine theme in their windows on Potomac Street.

The Lodge and the Community Free Clinic also put their own spin on empty windows. If you want to vote for your favorite downtown decorated window, you can stop in at Bulls and Bears, the visitors' bureau or the Gourmet Goat and cast your ballot.

The votes will be counted on December 14. The winner will be announced at the Maryland Symphony Orchestra holiday concert on December 16 at the Maryland Theatre.
