New Orleans Fire Chief and Family Remember the Day Katrina Hit

By: Import User
Updated: February 6, 2007
NBC25s Amie McLain grew up in New Orleans. She traveled back to her hometown and spoke with her uncle, the fire chief of New Orleans, and his family. "For me, watching people with babies, with nothing on, but a diaper, carrying whatever they had left in a bag and then walking up on national guardsmen, it just looked like something youd see from a third world country. Thats when I knew I didnt know how wed ever be the same again, said Charlotte Parent, Fire Chief Charles Parents wife. Nothing has been the same for Charlotte and her family since Katrina. This time last year her husband was saving lives as she was trying to save her own. "She didnt know where I was, but I knew she was in the hospital," said Chief Parent. They were both first responders. Charlotte was a nurse at one of the few operating hospitals in town. She and her 15-year-old daughter, Melanie, waited out the storm on the top floor. Three days had passed since Katrinas wrath and still no word from the chief. "I started at that point to worry, ‘where is he, I would ask the firemen and the communications had broken down," said Charlotte. "I hadnt talked to my family, cell phones were down. We dont have a land-line. I just want to talk to my family," said Charles. More than 72 hours after Katrina touched ground, Chief Parent finally reached Touro Hospital for a reunion with no need for words. "I jumped out and I started falling at first, but I jumped out and just hugged him and started crying because it was just so emotional," said Melanie, the Parents daughter. "The one thing I can remember as much as it was a joy to see him was that I remember telling him that he stunk because by this time it was three or four days he had been out there," said Charlotte. "I know I stunk too, we all stunk at that point," said Charlotte. "He told me at that point that where I was heaven compared to what was going on in the city, so I needed to stay put. Im thinking heaven; theres no food, no electricity, no air, no this, but thats because I truly had no clue what was going on outside that hospital," said Charlotte. "I asked him, ‘hows our house? and he replied calmly, "we can always get another one," said Melanie. The Parent family is now staying in a newly-built apartment on the other side of town. "Its hard for me to imagine a year ago where my life was as compared to where my life is now," said Charlotte. Its an anniversary bringing one family closer together as they remember the storm that ripped their lives far apart. For safety reasons, the Parent family remained separated for several months after the storm.
