Morgan County Courthouse Fire Ruled Accidental

Nearly a week after the early morning blaze that gutted the courthouse in downtown Berkeley Springs, investigators work to figure out exactly what sparked the fire. NBC25 has learned a preliminary report shows it likely started because of an electrical problem in the ceiling of the 2nd floor. Meanwhile, government business goes on elsewhere. "Our courthouse operations are in full function today. All our offices are operating, though theyre kind of scattered out," said Bob Ford, Morgan County Commissioner. Trailers will be the new offices, for a while. The corner building would have been 100 years old in 2009. The buildings future is up in the air, as investigators and insurance adjustors plug away to determine whether its worth re-building. "It would be great if we can. Its too early to make those assessments. I think were at least a month away from that decision," said Tommy Swaim, Morgan County Theyre focusing on building a new vault to store the records currently being restored in Texas. "We need to get that building up, completed, get our county records where they can be assessed by attorneys and so forth," said Swaim. While business is conducted in temporary locations, crews work to make sure the building is safe until town leaders decide its fate. "The bottom of the second floor is pretty secure right now. The guys have been in there walking around. Weve taken a few things out, and theyre starting to run their tests," said Donald DeHaven, owner of D & L Weld. The Fire Marshals Office tells NBC25, they hope to release an official report with the cause by Tuesday.
