On Monday, Washington County Commissioners determined how theyll be using the $30,000 Sex Offender and Compliance Enforcement Grant. The grant will be used to hire a part time office assistant who will act as the sex offender registrar. Funds will also be used to pay overtime for sheriffs deputies to conduct compliance checks and investigations. The Washington County Sheriffs Department also said the money will make them better equipped to deal with a growing number of sex offenders. "With the recent emergency legislation that was passed in Annapolis last month, this now gives us more sex offenders that we are going to have to check into," said Sheriff Charles Mades, Washington County Sheriff Office. There are currently 123 registered sex offenders in Washington County.
