Workers in Frederick Brave the Heat Inside and Outside

By: Import User
Updated: February 6, 2007
Temperatures are hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk, but imagine standing in front of a 500 degree oven. A hot oven is what Chef Brock Ormond has waiting for him when he gets to work. "At the pizza oven, it gets anywhere between say 120 and 130 outside. Inside, temperatures are between 500 to 650 degrees consistently. So, it gets pretty warm," said Ormond, Taurasos Restaurant. With hands so close the flames, Ormand can only laugh at people who complain its too hot outside! "Its kind of comical. Youve got to be used to dealing with heat, if youre going to work with heat," said Ormand. Letter carriers can only pray for rain, even sleet. "I drink lots of water, and I use anything I can to stay cool like the bandanna around my neck, or water bottles. I spray water on my face, things like that," said Susan Ledford, a letter carrier in Frederick. Working inside at the espresso bar can get close to 150 degrees. "To leave the back of this counter and go outside, just to wipe tables is a relief," said Bill Brown, owner of Frederick Coffee Company. It doesnt stop customers for asking for that extra hot latte, even when its plenty hot outdoors! "What happens is you raise your body temperature. So, the differential between the outside temperature and your body temperature is less. So, you actually feel cooler," said Brown. One hot spot to keep cool is the library. Although with summer reading programs in full swing, youll have to hunt for a place to sit and enjoy a book, and more importantly the air conditioning. What looks like a peaceful day at the park, could be extremely dangerous.
