Congressman Bill Shuster and Area Farmers Discuss FEMA's Efforts in Flood Relief

By: Import User
Updated: February 6, 2007
"In each case its like a mixed bag, but in this case I dont think it was handled the way it should have been," said Congressman Bill Shuster, (R) Pennsylvania. Its how Shuster is using to describe FEMAs efforts to help with the aftermath of Junes heavy flooding in Franklin County, in a round-table discussion. "What I would do differently is take FEMA away from Department of Homeland Security because FEMA doesnt have the resources necessary to respond to the flooding, which is what they need to do," said Shuster. "FEMAs responsibility is response and recovery to disasters. DHSs focus should be prevention and protection against terror attacks," said Shuster. These are changes local farmers would agree with. "I think that would probably be a good idea because were talking about two different situations here," said Eugene Wingert, a Franklin County farmer. But this wasnt the only topic at the round-table discussion. The issue of immigration also topped the list. Its vital to our industry especially horticultural producers in the region. We need harvest hands available to harvest the fruit when its ready. Theres no machine of mechanical means of harvesting fruit now, so we have to rely on hand harvest and it requires very specific amounts of labor," said Lee Showalter, another area farmer. "We need to control our border, Build a fence or add more people on the border. The second part is to enforce the laws. People who are here illegally need to go back to their countries. Business that knowingly hire illegally and I said knowingly, should have significant fines and be penalized for it," said Shuster. But for now, Shuster said hes looking to the folks on Capitol Hill to help make these changes happen. . The farmers at the meeting are members of Shusters Agricultural Advisory Committee. Reported by Marie Coronel" Bill Passed Regarding Convicted Murderer,1155045446,1155045446,"NBC25 - He was convicted of stabbing a Hagerstown couple to death. Now, Russell Wagners remains could be removed from Arlington National Cemetery.
