The memorial was unveiled on Sunday. After months of planning and thousands of dollars in donations, 13-year-old Jamie Bryner watched his project become a reality.
In addition to the unveiling of the memorial, the ceremony included several surprises. Outside, two Marine helicopters circled Southern Fulton High School.
"I think its been bigger than any of us ever thought it would be, especially Jamie," said Stephanie Bard, LCPL Steven Szwydeks sister.
What began as Jamies idea for a memorial honoring Lance Corporal Steven Szwydek and other fallen heroes grew into a tribute to all Marines and their families.
Inside, family members, supporters, and Marines filled every seat and sounds of the Hagerstowns St. Patricks Chorale and Marine Corps brass quintet filled the auditorium.
Jamie, who plans to join the marines as soon as hes old enough to enlist, didnt know Steven well, but has developed a special bond with his family.
"I think Jamie is almost a mirror image of our son, knowing his dedication and what he wants to be," said Nancy Szwydek, LCPL Steven Szwydeks mother.
"You have to have that motivation and desire to serve your nation first; Jamie has clearly shown that. He has that dedication," said Brigadier General Jim Walker.
Its a dedication that will not waiver after this ceremony.
Jamies next project is to send care packages to soldiers in Iraq and also young marines down in Camp Lejune.
Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell has ordered a flag be flown over the Capital in honor of Steven Szwydek. The flag will eventually be given to the Szwydek family.
