"This I think will be an interesting test of character for the team and to be honest, I think what will happen is this team will pull together. Theyre already talking about wearing his number, he was gonna wear number 76; wear his number on their helmets during the season," said Peter Gigliotti, a Shippensburg University spokesman.
"I think this will be a test of character, a test of family. Right now the question isnt about the season, or about win or loss, its about what we as a family can do to help someone who obviously had suffered a tragedy," said Gigliotti.
A statement released by head football coach Rocky Reese said "The coaches and players are devastated by the loss of Vince Bernardo. We are grieving tremendously for his parents and two sisters. He was very much a part of our family, as he was theirs."
The team are proceeding with their normal practice schedule. They will be in team meetings Tuesday night.
They will return to the field for regular practices Wednesday morning.
The university said there will be a memorial service held for Bernardo but a date and time have yet to be announced.
