HARPER'S FERRY

Updated: February 6, 2007
HaIts their mission to connect with thousands of radio operators nationwide and overseas. They only have 24 hours to do so without using commercial means of electricity. "Gasoline, diesel generators, water, or even bicycles; they set up temporary areas for the equipment, and then they communicate with everyone else in the country," said Patrick Fowler of the Eastern Panhandle Amateur Radio Club. "We send our energy up through our antennas and people grab it out, and listen to it and they do it back. Its a short exchange, but you try to do as many people are you can," said Fowler. Its an exercise that makes sure volunteers are ready and prepared to handle an emergency in case all electricity is lost. "Use different methods to try and find other ways of dealing with an emergency," said Brian Umbrell, Antietam Radio Club. Whether youve been operating ham radios for the past 15-years or are just starting out, its definitely a day to test your skills through the airwaves.
