breaking news
An employee at Good Humor found 80-year-old Kenneth Hanlin face down on the ground outside of the plant. Police said they found gravel marks from where Hanlin was crawling to try and escape.
Hanlin was last seen alive around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Police searched for Hanlin for more than five hours, but couldnt find him.
Hanlin lived right across the street from the plant at the Ravenwood Villiage, an assisted living facility. Although Hanlin suffered from dementia, officials said patients are allowed to sign out and leave.
Hanlin told employees at Ravenwood that he was going to the Dollar Store, but instead, he walked across the street to the Good Humor Plant and wandered off. The plant was open at the time, but when Hanlin tried to leave, the gate to the plant was closed, leaving him locked inside.
Officials strongly believe foul play was not the cause of his death.
"We believe it is all natural causes. It could have been anything from a heart attack to maybe a heat stroke because of the weather weve had. It could have been dehydration because he didnt have any water," said Sergeant David Long of the Hagerstown City Police.
Hanlin was never married, but his brother and his niece were very close to him. Officials will not know the exact cause of his death until an autopsy is done.
