Runners from the Maryland State Police, Washington County Sheriffs Office, and Hagerstown City Police started their portion of the Maryland Law Enforcement Torch Run in Hancock. Theyre making their way to the public square in Hagerstown for a ceremony kicking off at noon. Each year officers have a week long torch run to deliver the Flame of Hope to the Special Olympics summer games in Maryland. The torch run is a year round fundraiser and awareness event for Special Olympics athletes in Maryland. "Buying medals, giving them a party for what theyve done and law enforcement participates in it. They give the medals out to these people and they really enjoy it," said John Ryder, Regional Director, Maryland Special Olympics This is the 20th anniversary of the torch run that started in 1986. The run will continue into Frederick on Thursday and runners will end up at Towson University Saturday. Flames from all four portions of the run will be brought together to officially start the summer Special Olympics in Maryland. You can contribute to the cause by contacting the Maryland State Special Olympics organization.
