Our female Student Athlete of the Month is Mallory Wishard, a recent graduate of Waynesboro High School.  A letter winner in volleyball, basketball and softball for the Maidens, Mallory scored more than 1,000 points and is the school's all time leading scorer in basketball.

“Put academics first, before your sports, but you're still part of a team and give it your all after school, and just work together, in school and out of school,” said Mallory.

Off the field, Mallory carries a 3.8 G.P.A., is a member of the National Honor Society, and made the high honor roll in each of her 4 years at Waynesboro.  In the fall, Mallory will attend Hagerstown Community College, where she'll play basketball and softball and study nursing.

“Sports actually helped me get through school.  It gives me motivation.  I think, I mean, I love school, but sports makes school everything, sports is everything to me,” said Mallory.

The male student athlete of the month is Andrew Zimnik, a recent grad of Frederick High School.  Andrew lettered in football and baseball for the Cadets, and was team captain of the baseball squad that won the 2009 Maryland 3A state championship.

“A student-athlete is someone who can balance the pressures of being an athlete with the responsibilities of being a good student and perform well in both areas,” said Andrew.

Off the field, Andrew maintains a 4.6 G.P.A., and has won Ravens Nest, Frederick High School, and Baltimore Touchdown Club scholar athlete awards, and was named the 2009 Maryland All-State Academic Team quarterback.  Andrew has ambitious plans for his studies in college.

“I’m going to the University of Pittsburgh to study neuroscience and microbiology, and after that go on to medical school,” said Andrew.

Congratulations to Mallory Wishard and Andrew Zimnik, the NBC25 Student Athletes of the Month.
