“Being a student athlete to me is
being someone who can balance their time between sports and academics and still
stay at the top of their class,” says Matt, “and have time to study and do
their homework, but still be there for their team on the field.”
Off the field Matt carries a 4.0 G.P.A.
and is the student body president. He's
also a member of the National Honor Society, co-founded Martinsburg's Debate Club,
and is a member of the 24/1600 club for high ACT and SAT scores. Matt is planning to attend
“I'd like to get my Master's and,
kind of, get involved with a company, work my way up the ladder. I'd love to be a C.E.O. one day, that's a
dream of mine.
Our female Student Athlete of the
Month is Hedgesville senior Katey Sheehan.
Katey is a letter winner in both volleyball and basketball for the Eagles,
and was a volleyball co-captain this year.
“School comes before athletics,”
says Katey. “Like all my coaches say, I
have to have my homework done before we play.”
Katey maintains a 4.0 G.P.A., has
been active in student government, and will be inducted into the National Honor
Society this spring. After high school, Katey
plans to study speech therapy and special education.
“My uncle John is autistic, so I
kind of wanted to get into special education for that.”
Congratulations to Matt Yates, and Katey Sheehan, the NBC 25 Student Athletes of the Month for December, 2008.
