Md. Senate Passes Bill to Prohibit Schools Obtaining Student Social Media IDs

ANNAPOLIS, MD- The Maryland Senate unanimously passed a bill on Friday to prohibit schools, colleges and universities from asking for a student's social media user ID and password.

Senator Ron Young's bill, of Frederick and Washington Counties, now heads to the Maryland House of Delegates.

The Maryland Senator became the first legislator in the nation to sponsor a similar law, banning employers from asking for social media user ID's and passwords.

Now Young says he would like to see the same for students.

"I think a lot of older people don't look at the technology of what the youth are doing today. We can't ask to come into your house and listen to your phone calls or read your mail. We shouldn't have the right to read your private conversations on a computer either," says Young.
