Jeffrey Schmutzler, of Fayetteville, Pa., was arrested at his home on Thursday and charged with distribution and receipt of material involving the sexual exploitation of minors, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the middle district of Pennsylvania.
The charges were filed in a criminal complaint in federal court on Thursday.
According to court documents, prosecutors said Schmutzler's home computer and storage units were seized, most of which carried pornographic images.
Chambersburg Area School District officials were notified of the arrest. Schmutzler is currently listed as a World Langues teacher at the high school on the district's webpage.
Schmutzler appeared in federal court Thursday at 4 p.m. before Chief Magistrate Judge Martin C. Carlson, where he waived his primarily hearing.
The clerks office at the federal courthouse in Harrisburg says Schmutzler was released to the custody of a third party custodian on $60,000 bail.
The case is being investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations and the Pennsylvania State Police.
