FREDERICK, MD - So far this year, the City of Frederick has had a total of more than 20 reported robberies, and more than 40 burglaries.

The latest robbery resulted in a police chase that ended in the 100 block of South Market Street.

Police are looking for the man that led three officers on a car chase after he robbed the SunTrust Bank on Rosemont Avenue.

"The driver fled on a long chase, a pretty long motor vehicle chase, and with the help of Maryland State Police, and the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, and MSP helicopter, we were able to locate the vehicle," says Chief Thomas Ledwell of the Frederick Police Department.

"We heard the chopper going overhead we didn't know what was going on," says Eli Roth of Frederick.

Officials say they were able to obtain a charging document for 36-year-old James Vanwinkle of Greencastle, Pennsylvania.

With crime on a steady pace in 2013, Chief Ledwell says the department is stepping up patrols where it's needed.

People in the area say they feel safe, even if there's an uptick in crime.

"I've always felt safe, in any environment you're going to get crime and in Frederick it's few and far between," says Roth.

"I think it's all a matter of people being people it's not going to change, it doesn't matter what community you live in, or what area," says Tara McNeish, of Barnesville, MD.

Reports show crime did go up last year and Chief Ledwell says as the first quarter of the year wraps up, the numbers are on pace with those from 2012 .

Police are also looking for the passenger who was in Vanwinkle's car during the chase. Both are still at large.
