MARYLAND - State Police say all cellphones that receive wireless emergency alerts will now be sent Amber alerts in Maryland.
Amber alerts are used to find abducted children and State Police say the system has been instrumental in saving the lives of over 600 children nationwide.
The wireless alert will consist of ninety characters and be accompanied by a loud tone similar to an emergency alert on radio or television.
In the past, cellphone owners had to go to a website and opt in to receive Amber alerts.
The alerts can be shut off by contacting your service provider or by changing the settings of your alerts/notifications in your phone.
