The blaze broke out just after 5 a.m. at a home on Zebra Lane off Rock Gap Road in Berkeley Springs.
Fire officials say the fire started in the chimney and spread through the entire house. The flames were put out in less than 30 minutes. Officials say two people were inside when the fire started, but escaped without injury.
"The smoke alarm gave them an advantage. They were a sound asleep and woke up to the smoke alarm," says Matt Grimley, Assistant Fire Chief of Great Cacapon Fire Department. "I would say the smoke alarm played a key role in their safety."
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Eight fire departments responded, including units from Maryland and Virginia.
