HAGERSTOWN, MD- The Hagerstown Utilities Department is warning residents to be aware of a suspect pretending to be utility staff and offering to re-connect their electric service for cash.

Officials say the suspect makes this request while residents are moving into their new home.

Officials say some ways to make sure the person is not a fraud, is all city of Hagerstown employees carry a photo ID badge. If customers do not see one displayed, they may request to view it.

All requests for electronic service re-connection are handled through the Customer Service Office at City Hall. At no point do they ever accept cash at any time for any function.

If a customer has any questions regarding electric service or an employee please call (301)-790-4160.

The Hagerstown Police Department is currently investigating into the reported cases. Police are asking if you have any information on the suspect or believe you may be a victim, to please call at (301)-790-3700.
