Blue Ridge Air Show Preparations Are Underway

MARTINSBURG, WV - It's perhaps one of the biggest events in the community, drawing thousands of people each year.

Organizers with the Thunder Over the Blue Ridge Air Show say they're excited for what they expect to be a another hit this May. However, there will be one change.

"They've asked that this year we take it back to the civilian side of the field. The military will help us in preparations for the Thunderbirds and other military statics that will be here for the show this spring," says Bill Walkup of the Blue Ridge Air Show.

Even though the 167th Airlift Wing will not be hosting the open house and have a slightly lesser role during the air show, Nic Diehl from the Thunder Board says it's still expected to be a great event.

"Well it's the same runway but people watching the show will stand on the eastern West Virginia Regional Airport side of the field, versus the 167th Airlift Wing. There's a little more grass. Other than that it's going to be a very similar show," says Diehl.

Diehl says the 167th airlift wing is not hosting the event this year due to budget cuts and fiscal uncertainties.

However, he says the 167th wing will still play a big role by assisting with the set up, bringing in two C-5's to the civilian ramp, providing for the U.S. Thunderbirds, and taking care of the runway.

The Thunder of the Blue Ridge Air Show is scheduled for May 11th and 12th.
