Fairplay Volunteer Fire Department Is No More

FAIRPLAY, MD- After failing to respond to calls in a timely manner, county commissioners have taken matters into their own hands and are making sure the Fairplay Volunteer Fire Department will not get dispatched to any more calls.

"We seize to recognize the Fairplay Fire Company as a fire fighting entity in Washington County," says William Mckinley, a Washington County Commissioner.

"It's sad that the commissioners had to put them out of service for them to see what was really going on," says Tim Warrenfeltd, a concerned citizen.

When commissioners were made aware of the departments poor performance in the summer, they suspended the fire company. Commissioners then put together a task force to research what the best solution would be.

"One of the major recommendations were a change in leadership," says Mckinley.

"When firefighters had a say about the way the company was ran, they would not allow that to come and would throw another set four, five or six people out," says Kevin Clipp, a member of the task force.

The county will officially have one less fire department to tend to emergencies but county officials say residents shouldn't have to worry about their safety.

"That area will be covered by the same four companies that have been covering it since July," says Mckinley.

"The residents of Fairplay have been better served since July 31st," says Clipp. "That's when Company 12 was placed out of service, the response times have been less."

"I feel we have better protection now than we had before," says Warrenfeltd.

The four fire company's that are taking calls for Fairplay are Williamsport, Sharpsburg, Funkstown and Boonsboro.
