ROMNEY, WV - It's a major change for the community; the Honorable Donald Cookman has just been appointed to represent the 15th Senatorial District in West Virginia.
Cookman says while he aspired to enter the legislative branch for a long time, he says this appointment came to him unexpected.
"When he called I frankly thought he was calling to let me down. That it was just a courtesy call to say it was not me. So I was shocked, surprised, and delighted frankly," says Cookman.
Prior to his appointment Cookman spent more than 20 years serving as the Chief Judge of the Judicial Circuit for Hampshire, Hardy and Pendleton counties. Those who worked with Cookman say his move is bitter-sweet for them.
Cookman considers his move to the legislative process a new era in his life.
"It's very humbling to serve as the 15th Senatorial District in West Virginia and I look forward to doing that and hopefully I can meet that challenge," says Cookman.
Governor Earl Ray Tomblin appointed Cookman to represent the 15th Senatorial District Wednesday.
