New Mayor of Brunswick Makes First City Address

BRUNSWICK, MD- The new mayor of a small city in Frederick County, spoke to local residents and business leaders for the first time in her new role on Thursday.
Brunswick Mayor Karin Tome says bringing in more businesses and revitalizing the downtown area are some initiatives.
"I am very optimistic for the city of Brunswick," says Tome. "I know that we are still in a tough economic situation, I see a lot of great signs of more and more people being interested in the city of Brunswick."
Another objective of Mayor Tome is to boost tourism by attracting tourists to the city's historical landmarks.
"We are also going to bring in a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad caboose and put it near our railroad station, and make our city more bicyclists and hiker friendly to attract the people of the C&O Canal."
Tome says she wants to attract new residents to the city as well, bringing in ones who work in the nearby big cities and want to raise a family in a smaller town. She says she's also hoping to add some big city elements to the area.
"We are hoping that cultural arts will be picking up in Brunswick. We have talked about arts and entertainment before, and we are going to look at it some more," says Tome. "We are also looking into more sustainable practices that may attract more people to our city too."
As for residents, some are hoping for economic growth.
"I have a small business myself, and meeting the challenge of a changing economy because of the technology, it both is a blessing and a threat. It will lead to increased productivity and people will lose jobs," says Ellis Burress, a Brunswick resident.
Mayor Tombin is excited to bring a book full of ideas from the big city to a small town. Mayor Tome is also a library associate at the Brunswick Public Library.
