Dispatch says they received the call at 11:04 a.m.
Officials say all fire and rescue crews responded to the scene, and most of the area was closed for an extended period of time.
Officials say the leak occurred in a two and a half story duplex, and believe the building to be vacant.
Firefighters evacuated 28 people from eight nearby buildings, most of them apartments, to Julia Manor Nursing Home. They say residents were allowed to return to their homes around 1:30 p.m.
Fire officials say they initially could not get close enough to the leak to find out the cause, because of the explosive nature of it. Columbia Gas was on the scene to shut off the gas and make repairs.
Fire officials say there are still some limited road closures in the 200 block of Frederick Street.
No injuries have been reported.
