THURMONT, MD - Colby Child and his son A.J. can agree that Boy Scouting runs in their genes.
Adding
to their long list of badges and accomplishments, these guys lucked out
and snagged one of only 750 spots to volunteer during the Presidential
Inauguration as a Boy Scout Troop.
"I don't want to say
elation. I think the parents were more excited because we truly
understand. We have several older scouts that are 17, 15, in that age
range, and they were flabbergasted. They were just astounded that we're
really going to get to do this," says Colby Child, a member of the
National Capitol Area Council.
Troop 1011 will be stationed
along Constitution Avenue to help guide people, then stick around for
the tougher job of cleaning up.
"I've always helped people,
so I'm going to stick with that for the time. Then afterwards, we're
going to do our best to make it better than it was before the
Inauguration, like cleaner," says A.J. Child, member of Boy Scout Troop
1011.
They'll be dressed in special uniform, and earn another badge to sew on.
"They
will get a special, commemorative patch, and some of them have already
said they can't wait to put it on their uniform; I'm going to frame
mine," adds Colby.
Colby says they're so proud to represent Boy Scouts of the Catoctin Mountain District.
"Often
times, one of the things we like to say in scouting is, the one who
passes on with the most stories wins. That's what scouting is all about:
Making stories," says Colby.
