She says, "I'm from Panama. This summer my family and I are going to travel to Panama together so we are trying to get trim and fit before then."
Rengifo's New Year's Resolution is to work out at the gym. Her plan? Six months time to lose 30 pounds.
"I just want to lose five pounds every month and then lose 30 pounds by June," says Rengifo. "By the time summer comes around I'll be able to fit into swimsuits and everything will be nice and trim and in shape by the time we go on vacation."
The YMCA in Hagerstown says membership peaks every New Year. They see a mix of both new and familiar faces at their gym.
Sonia Reyes, YMCA Fitness Director, says, "I want to believe people are more conscious they want to start a new year everybody is. Everybody has new goals in life and I guess exercise."
Jim Gross has been working out at the YMCA for six years now. He says, "This time of the year, your January through March it's New Year's Resolutions. Everybody makes them. Usually the question is, are they going to stick with them or not, but at least they're going in the right direction and trying to make good changes for the New Year."
Some gym goers are also trying to shed the holiday pounds.
"We kind of just broke all the rules we didn't care," says Rengifo. "We were like, it's Christmas and Thanksgiving. Whatever. Once January comes around we're going to stop we're cutting everything off, and we got rid of all the desserts and all the extra stuff by new year."
She says the new year feels like a clean slate, and maybe why others are also feeling motivated to feel the burn.
