Oldtown Man Sentenced to Eight Years in Prison in Shooting Death of Neighbor

CUMBERLAND, MD - Court officials say an Oldtown man will serve eight years in prison
after being sentenced Tuesday in connection to the March shooting death
of his neighbor.
Officials say Alexander Malaska, 70, fired a single shot at Dennis Liller, 43, wounding him in the upper torso before his was pronounced dead.
Assistant State's Attorney Erich Bean says Malaska was sentenced eight years in prison out of a possible ten, in the conviction of voluntary man-slaughter. Malaska was convicted of the charge in a circuit court jury trial in September.
According to court documents, Malaska was indicted by an Allegany County grand jury in April after he was arrested March 28th.
Investigators say that a land dispute had been going on since September on who owned property between the two residences in the 23000 block of Pack Horse Tail.
Malaska reportedly fired the .22 caliber rifle several times into the road and one of the shots killed Liller.
The case was investigated by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, C31 Unit, Maryland Natural Resources Police, Allegany County Sheriff's Office.
