WINCHESTER, VA - The fire department had arrived at the scene and so did the sheriff's department but this time, it was on a lighter note.
"There's a lot of families out there that need ... with the economy the way it is, you know, families are struggling and it's nice to know that we can actually help them," says Kristopher Bageant, chief of operations for Shenandoah Valley Fire.
The Shenandoah Valley Fire held its first annual toy drive to help those who are going through tough times.
"A mother of twins, she couldn't provide for her children for Christmas and it was just overwhelming," adds Bageant.
Toys were being collected from the community, with hopes of children having a merry Christmas.
The Greenwood Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company put on demonstrations and the Frederick County Sheriff's Department taught kids about fingerprinting.
"We're fingerprinting all the kids and giving information to the parents as far as fingerprints and telling them, give an accurate picture of the forms and teaching them about DNA swabbing," says Deputy Richard White of the Frederick County Sheriff's Department.
Bageant says it breaks his heart to hear stories who are suffering from tragic incidents and cannot provide for their children.
"A lot of stories that we've heard from them, that you know, people's houses burned down, they had a car accident, and they're struggling financially," adds Bageant.
Thanks to a large community support, many children can now celebrate the holidays for a reason.
The event was hosted by Ledo Pizza and the first 50 people that brought in a new, unwrapped gift received a free eight-inch pizza.
