Town commissioners unanimously voted Wednesday night to ban the sale of synthetic marijuana after a public hearing.
Those caught with the drug in town will face a maximum punishment of $1,000 fine or 30 days in jail. The town's ordinance outlaws the sale and possession of the drug.
According to town commissioners, the ordinance will take effect in 20 days.
The town's charter puts limitations on penalties that could be enforced, and does not currently allow officials to increase the punishment.
