Tourism Skyrockets in Washington County

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau says 2012 may be the best year ever for local tourism.

A record 2,000,000 visitors, both day-trippers and overnighters, came to the County last year. The Bureau says they put a new focus on sports because there is huge money in the sports travel industry, especially when it comes to hotel bookings.

Bureau President and CEO, Tom Riford, says that without tourism unemployment in Washington County would double.

"It's been a great year for Washington County. Tourism is way up, we have a lot more people working in the leisure and hospitality classification, and jobs are important and we want to be able to have a healthy economy in Washington County," says Tom Riford, President and CEO of Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Visitors Bureau says it's on track to spend about $1,075,000 per year.

Comments

of course tourism will be amazing the same year as the 150th anniversary of Antietam. Let's see the numbers next year.
