HAGERSTOWN, MD - It was a historic day for same-sex couples, who were able to apply for marriage licenses in Maryland for the first time.

The Attorney General decided couples could begin picking up marriage licenses as soon as Governor Martin O'Malley certified the results of the election. But,  they won't be legally married until the new year.

"Same sex couples will not be able to be married, or have the ceremony until January 1st," says Dennis Weaver, circuit court clerk of Washington County.

The only thing different on their marriage license is the date. They'll be postdated for January 1st.

"We don't know what to anticipate here for January, whether there will be a rush or not because Washington D.C. had already legalized same sex marriage, so a lot of couples may already be married," says Weaver. "But I do anticipate a small increase permanently because of our proximity to West Virginia and Pennsylvania, so I would expect couples to come here from those states."

Marriage licenses cost $60. While Montgomery County, Md. saw a rush today, it was quieter in western Maryland. But Frederick, Washington and Allegany counties all saw their first same sex couples come in to apply for their marriage licenses

If you don't like gay marriage, then don't have one.

Wow. Notice how Maryland didn't burst into flames, or fall into the Chesapeake Bay because of gay marriage. Letting people who love each other , be with each other , is the right thing to do.
