Community College offers Police Course Program

HAGERSTOWN, MD - One local college is starting a police academy next year for those interested in a career as a law enforcement officer.
Hagerstown Community College will offer a six-month police course program beginning in March.
They say the classes are designed to prepare the students to work in local police and sheriff departments. HCC has been working with Hagerstown City Police and the Washington County Sheriff's Office to construct the program outline. They say the first class will accommodate up to 20 students.
"There is a need in the community. There is an excitement about bringing a police academy to this part of the state in western Maryland," says John King, the Director of Hagerstown Community College Police Academy. "Currently new officers have to travel elsewhere throughout the state, pretty far away to get that entry level training."
King was the Director of Education and Training for the Baltimore Police Department. Before that, King served as the Chief of the Gaitherburg Police Department.
