Sharpsburg Man Turns Himself in After Eight-Hour Barricade

SHARPSBURG, MD - Maryland State Police say Terry Porter, 46, of Sharpsburg, came forward Friday morning and is now in custody.

Police say Porter voluntarily came to the Maryland State Police Hagerstown Barrack at 9:30 a.m. They say Porter has been charged with firearms violations.

Police say this comes after an eight hour barricade situation Thursday in Sharpsburg, where police say they were serving a search warrant against Porter after getting a tip that he had illegal weapons inside his home on Mills Road.

Troppers say they were not able to find him at the time but took two rifles and three shot guns from the home. Police say they received another rifle and shot gun on Friday during their investigation.

Porter has been charged with seven counts of possession of a rifle or shot gun when prohibited and seven counts of possession of a fire arm when prohibited. Porter was taken to the Washington County Central booking unit where he is awaiting an appearance before a court commissioner.

Comments

I don't understand. How did the cops have an "eight hour barricade" situation, when, as I gather from the story, he wasn't even home. Also, based upon the previous comment, I take it that this is a regular working guy with a felony conviction from twenty five years ago. If he wasn't allowed to legally own any firearms, so be it, I can't defend him on that count if that is the case....but, it doesn't appear that any of the recovered firearms were particularly spectacular. They didn't find full automatic weapons or anything, and the guy apparently wasn't a drug kingpin. Now, granted I understand him just having any firearm was illegal, but they had the FBI, State Police, County Sheriffs and two spec ops teams??? Either there is alot more to this story than is being reported, or that seems like extreme overkill. If he was a guy with a family who works everyday, wouldn't you just call him and ask him to come for some questioning, and maybe send a couple officers to check his house while he was at the barracks? Usually guys with a house, regular job and a family are given a little consideration as they are not considered flight risks. If there is more to tell, I'd be very interested in hearing it.

Possibility Terry was just plain scared. Possibility having a firearm gave him the assurance that if anyone or anything would come near his family to harm them, this would be a way of protecting them. Terry seems to be liked by most of his neighbors, if not all but one. Seems to me he is an asset to this community. Seems he tried to get a fire arm (as you call it) by doing all the things he was suppose to do, yet because of a conviction from over 25 years ago, he was denied, and the conviction did not involve the use of fire arms, I believe I am correct. He has done all the right things, has a home, a good job and is raising his family. Things seemed ok till someone moved into the neighborhood and bought some pit bulls with her and they just happen to mull and tear his beloved dog to pieces. He did everything right, took the owner of the dogs to court and yet because he did not put a monetary price on his dogs life, the judge left the owner of the pit bulls keep her dogs. I understand most of his neighbors in this community was unhappy with the outcome of the trial. . How can you put a monetary value on something you love so much. It seems the pit bulls did get loose at times and everyone in the neighborhood is freightened they could be the next victim of these dogs. I believe if this man bought a gun or guns in a way that is now not the lawful way of doing so, possibility our local police forces should do a little more investigation on the person who buys the guns from the person or persons who are selling them before jumping to conclusions about the buyer. I would say the person selling the guns may be an unlawful character and as this instance is much more of a bad guy than Terry. By the way, does the guy who sold the guns to Terry pay his taxes to our state and local government? I am saying here, Terry just wants to protect his family, nothing more. Why then should he be the one who is punished? Why was he again scared to death, he is the one who works every day, takes care of his family, and provides for them and his community.
