HAGERSTOWN, MD - The first public meeting for new city officials came and went Tuesday.
One Councilman shares how he believes downtown can flourish.
"There is clearly a theme even with the A&E District and incentive programs of education being sort of the foundation from which downtown has survived over the last decade," says City Councilman Kristin Aleshire.
Setting the educational tone downtown Hagerstown has the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts, a new library opening next spring and the University System of Maryland.
Mayor David Gysberts says, "The University System of Maryland is a huge asset that we need to continue to work to build. The possibility of the Board of Education coming down, I think, is a good idea."
While no formal decisions have been made for moving the Board of Education, city officials say it would remain consistent with the downtown theme.
"It's sort of a next logical step being that you've already moved so many educational components into the downtown as part of that effort over such a long period of time," says Councilman Aleshire.
When asked how a ball park fits into this theme, Mayor Gysberts says downtown Hagerstown can have multiple themes. Gysberts tells WHAG he thinks the city will have a new stadium in the future, just maybe not at the current proposed location.
